The historic Oaklea Mansion has been buzzing with activity as we near the completion of a remarkable new addition—an event center housed in the old Carriage House! This space will be ready to host parties, potlucks, wedding receptions, and other memorable events by January.
Initially, the Carriage House was an essential part of life at Oaklea during the era of horse-drawn vehicles. While most people stored their wagons in simple barns, wealthier families like the Carlocks built elaborate carriage houses to protect their fine carriages from the elements. Like today's garages, these buildings shielded the vehicles from sun, rain, and snow. Often, the carriage house also served as the residence for the coachman or caretaker, who looked after both the horses and the carriages.
Now, this charming piece of history is being revitalized for modern use while still preserving its timeless character. If you’re looking for a unique space with historical charm for your next event, contact Oaklea Mansion for more details on booking the new event center.
But that's not all! We’re also thrilled to announce the return of the Carlock Museum. The Carlock family tree now proudly adorns the museum walls, offering visitors a glimpse into the legacy of Marcus Dewitt Carlock, the original owner of Oaklea Mansion. A prominent figure in Winnsboro, Marcus owned a store and several sawmills and even served as Justice of the Peace. Among his many notable guests were Governor Jim Hogg and his daughter, Ima Hogg.
Stay tuned for the return of our guided mansion tours, where you can dive deeper into the rich history of Oaklea Mansion and the Carlock family. We look forward to welcoming you soon!
