Fall and Winter Nostalgia

As I sat in my home office today, gazing out at the sunny fall day, memories of past autumns and winters began to flood my mind. This time of year, with its crisp air and golden hues, has a way of wrapping us in nostalgia. The changing seasons bring more than just a shift in the weather—they carry the essence of family, tradition, and comfort. For me, it brings fall and winter nostalgia rushing in.

For many, fall and winter are seasons filled with memories of lights and togetherness. They are times to gather with loved ones, exchange gifts, and indulge in hearty comfort food. For me and others, it's The vibrant colors of fall leaves, the way the sky changes to a deeper blue and the sight of birds flying south. Childhood memories of playing football with cousins, exploring the woods, and sitting by a bonfire fill my heart with joy.

And oh, the smells of the season! Coffee enjoyed on the porch in cozy flannel pajamas, the crunch of leaves underfoot, the smoky aroma of bonfires, and the warm scent of fireplaces are truly magical.

Food Memories: Granny’s Skillet Cornbread

No discussion of fall and winter nostalgia is complete without food. At Oaklea Mansion, we embrace this sentiment by offering hearty, homemade breakfasts crafted from fresh, local ingredients—perfect for making new memories with your family. By the way, if you have family staying at Oaklea, they might fill up on the breakfast made with love and fresh ingredients.

For me, food is tightly woven into the fabric of my seasonal memories, especially the dishes my Granny used to make. A child of the Depression era, Granny was an extraordinary cook who could turn simple ingredients into masterpieces. While her famous dinner rolls (never matched) were a treat for special occasions, her skillet cornbread was a daily delight.

Granny’s cornbread was nothing like the sweet, cakey versions you often find today. Made without sugar, it reflected the resourcefulness of her time, when staples like cornmeal, buttermilk, and eggs created a rustic, comforting dish. The smell of it baking, the crunchy exterior, and the soft, tender interior were pure magic.

I’m delighted to share her cherished recipe with you below.

Granny’s Skillet Cornbread

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup grease (bacon grease or lard preferred; other oils can be substituted)

  • 3 cups cornmeal (medium ground preferred)

  • 1/2 cup flour

  • 2 teaspoons salt

  • 2 teaspoons baking powder

  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda

  • 2 cups buttermilk (a must!)

  • 2 large eggs

  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter (never margarine)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 450°F. Place a 10-inch cast iron skillet with the grease in the oven while it preheats. Granny always sprinkled a pinch of cornmeal into the grease to test its heat.

  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the dry ingredients. In a smaller bowl, whisk the eggs and buttermilk until combined.

  3. Add the buttermilk mixture to the dry ingredients and stir until just blended. Pour the hot grease (leaving some in the skillet) into the batter and mix gently.

  4. Pour the batter back into the hot skillet and bake for 22 minutes or until golden brown.

Enjoy warm, with butter, or alongside your favorite soup or chili.
